Sept. 12, 2009

It's Saturday afternoon and I just finished working down at the Capitol Theatre again helping it to get ready for its grand re-opening on Sept. 23rd. Tonight at 8:00 pm, I will be watching the Joe Negri Trio appearing at Oglebay Institute Jazz at the Stifel series.

Also tonight in Wheeling is the new Wheeling Jamboree at the Victoria Theater. Next up for the Victoria are two performances by Ray Stevens next Thursday the 17th. Last time I saw Ray Stevens was at a teen dance at the Capitol Theatre ball-room. Bobby Vinton and his Band backed him up. That was probably 45 years ago.

Also on the agenda this week is Lunch with Books on Tuesday at Noon with Kate Quinn giving a history lesson on the Capitol Theatre.

The big thing happening in Wheeling next week is the Sternwheel Festival on Saturday and Sunday on the waterfront. They always have good entertainment and lots of beautiful sternwheelers. But 5 years ago it had to be cancelled at the last moment when the waters kept rising and rising and rising. On the Friday night before the festival was to open, the amphitheatre was completely under water as was most of Water St. A friend of mine had his booth set up with his stock under the tables. He lost everything. I had just come back from the Canton, OH area and couldn't believe my eyes. I spent some time in a bar on 12th St. that had the water lapping at their front door. TV7 was covering the flood. When I left there, I caught George Kellas on WKKX AM-1600 reporting on all the roads that were closed and how one had to drive to get anywhere in this county. To get from downtown Wheeling to Warwood, I had to go up Country Club Road, take Pogues Run Rd to GC&P Rd. and then pick up Table Rock and Cherry Hill Rd. Even this was a bad route because there were slips blocking half of Pogues Run Rd. The lower part of GC&P Rd was completely closed because of slips.

Also happening this week on Tuesday evening is Route 66 being performed at the Vineyard Cafe on Waddles Run Rd. For someone who likes the 1950-60 sounds, this is a night to make an appearance.
